For centuries China has uniquely and profoundly shaped East Asia.  But why has China’s recent economic and cultural shift radically changed its influence as well as its own past?  Can contemporary India serve as a link to understanding contemporary China?  How do China’s and India’s modernity compare and how can they refresh each other?

Johnson Chang (Chang Tsong-zung) explores why it is time for China to take stock and examine the paradigms of how society and politics are imagined.  He will examine alternative paths to modernity and show how the Indian example can be an excellent companion to China in its pursuit to recapture its own historical ethos.

A curator of Chinese art exhibitions since the 1980s, Johnson Chang is also a guest professor at the China Art Academy, art director of Hanart T Z Gallery (Hong Kong), co-founder of the Asia Art Archive (Hong Kong) and co-founder of the Hong Kong chapter of the International Association of Art Critics (AICAHK).
