Karen Smith, a respected Chinese contemporary art expert, moved from Hong Kong to Beijing in 1992 on the trail of China's “new art”. Twelve years later, and with many experiences under her belt as a result of having a first-hand, ringside seat to the developments and events of more than a decade, her devotion has paid off. Her soon-to-be-published book, Nine Lives: The Birth of Avant-Garde Art in New China, follows the life stories of nine of the leading Chinese artists who pioneered the avant-garde movement through the 1980s. Today they remain some of its most influential and revered figures.

In this illustrated lecture, Karen will introduce the evolution of these leading artists and their work, and through them discuss the development of contemporary art in China.
