Our tradition is back and we are happy to announce that our Annual Winter Reception is still on. Come and join us to celebrate the end of a challenging year and share the festive spirit with an evening of world class music.

We are delighted to have a concert performance by the Beijing Renaissance Ensemble of choir masterpieces from the golden age of a capella music. Choral music of the Renaissance, an extension of the Gregorian chant, is sung a cappella in Latin and is one of the most iconic musical legacies of medieval Europe. The ensemble is expected to perform pieces by French composer, Josquin des Prez, widely regarded as the first master of the high Renaissance style of polyphonic vocal music, as well as more familiar Christmas carols in the traditional style.

Please stay after the concert for our annual BIS Winter Reception – a chance to meet new friends and catch up with old ones over drinks and food before the winter holidays.

The Beijing Renaissance Ensemble

Founded in 2003 by a group of early music enthusiasts as a non-profit chorus group, the Beijing Renaissance Ensemble is dedicated to performing and spreading the Gregorian chants and polyphonic a capella art of the Renaissance period. Since its establishment, it has performed a large number of Renaissance a cappella choir works, including Claudio Monteverdi’s Missa a4 da capella SV257 (2011), Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Missa O Magnum Mysterium (2012) and Missa pro defunctis 1583 (2013), Charles d’Ambleville’s Messe des Jésuites de Pékin (2014), Josquin des Prez’s Missa Ave maris stella (Special Concert for Anniversary of Chinese Academy of Oil Painting – China Premiere, 2015), Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli (UCCA special concert – China Premiere, 2016), and Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Missa pro Defunctis 1605 (China Premiere, 2019), among others. By continuously organizing public concerts, the Beijing Renaissance Ensemble provides local music lovers with opportunities to listen in person to masterpieces from classical European Renaissance composers, which otherwise could only be heard on commercial albums.
