Creating a sustainable future for Asia – the role of the AIIB

We are thrilled to announce a talk from AIIB Vice President Danny Alexander, on the bank’s drive to put environmental sustainability at the heart of its agenda.

Founded in January 2016, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is the first multilateral development bank to be based in China. With 103 members and a remit to support sustainable infrastructure across Asia, the AIIB has an influential role in supporting projects that can deliver local environmental improvements.

Climate change continues to be the most challenging area for sustainable development. The AIIB has set itself a target that by 2025, climate finance will represent 50% of all financing approvals.  Part of the solution is ‘green infrastructure’ - infrastructure projects that focus on climate change mitigation or adaptation – yet the global volume of investment in such projects remains well below  desired targets. Alexander will explore how the AIIB is helping to raise investment in green infrastructure projects, as well as explain the challenges in doing so, particularly at a time when global resources have been diverted into the fight against coronavirus.

How do we continue to ensure a greener future for Asia when there are many conflicting needs and priorities? What challenges does the AIIB face as it advocates its agenda for projects that are sustainable and which act against climate change? And how can it persuade its project partners, client countries and member countries to follow the same path? Join us to find out.
