Film: Lao Jing (The Old Well)

Directed by Zhang Yimou

Canadian Embassy

This 1987 film was directed by Wu Tianming. Zhang Yimou, now himself one of China's best-known film directors, is the male lead, and Liang Yuyin plays opposite him. The scene is a village high in the mountains of Shaanxi which has been cursed for centuries with a lack of water. We see the tenacity of the villagers as they struggle to maintain their home. A love triangle of suppressed emotion is interwoven with the drama as the search for water continues against all odds and despite incredible hardship. The cinematography, by Zhang Yimou and Chen Wancai, is very beautiful.
