The Mystery of Bronze Bells and Their Music in Ancient China

Dr. Lothar van Falkenhausen, Archaeologist

Mexican Embassy

The extraordinary fact is that the Chinese only discovered in 1978 that the famous bronze bells of the Zhou and Shang dynasties, excavated and preserved carefully for hundreds of years in China, can produce two quite different notes when struck in different places. We do not know how they achieved this. We do not know how their music sounded.

Dr. Lothar van Falkenhausen, a German archaeologist and expert on bronze bells, will be giving this lecture, and may be able to explain some of the mystery.
