Outing: Boat Ride on Imperial Canal

Michael Crook, Guide

As promised, this is a repeat of last Fall's very popular event. Started in the Jin Dynasty (AD 1115-1234), some canals were built as waterways for the imperial family to travel to and from the winter palace of the Forbidden City to the Summer Palace. These routes continued to be used through the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties to the present. Just last year, sections of the canal were reopened. Michael Crook, who specializes in finding little-known gems of destinations, will once again be our guide. BIS members will be guided through a scenic portion of the canal on a chartered boat. Interesting historical details and stories of the canal and the places along its route will be told.
