Outing: Famous Catholic Sites of Beijing

Professor Yu Qilong

Professor Yu Qilong, an old friend of BIS, will lead a tour on the important Catholic churches of Beijing. Himself a Graduate of the "College Francais" of the Nan Tang (or South Cathedral of Beijing) and of the famous Jesuit "Universit • Aurore" in Shanghai, Professor Yu Qilong will take us from the Church of Saint-Michel in the old legation quarter, the French Embassy church, then to the Nan Tang, the South Cathedral originally built by the great Italian Jesuit Matteo Ricci, then to the Bei Tang, or Northern Cathedral, the gothic style fief of once powerful Monsignor Favier and the seat of one of the most tragic episodes of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. We'll end our tour in the Dong Tang, Saint-Joseph, on Wang Fu Jing Street. All these churches originally built for Roman Catholics are all active now under the jurisdiction of the Chinese Catholic Church.
