Rural Poverty in China

Dr. Juergen Voegele,

Agricultural specialist

German Embassy

17 Dongzhimenwai Dajie

The lecture will provide an overview of the environmental and social challenges of poor people living in the remote parts of western China. What is the Government doing to help the rural poor and how can other countries and institutions help to improve their lives?

The presentation will be complemented by a short video clip showing the actual situation of farmers in the Loess Plateau area, a remote and desolate place in northwest China, where a very large poverty alleviation program is changing the lives of millions of people in a sustainable way.

The lecture will be given by Dr. Juergen Voegele, a German agricultural specialist. For the past eight years, he has been working on China and is currently head of the Rural Development Unit at the World Bank's office in China. He holds a master's degree in agronomy and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics.
