Professor Liang Congjie, Founder and President, Friends of Nature (FON)
The environment is a major issue in the world today. Friends of Nature (FON) is mainland China's first non-government environmental organization. FON has drawn the attention of key officials to environmental issues in China since it was founded in 1993. FON successfully protected the habitat of the golden monkey in Yunnan, has preserved the natural forest of Sichuan and Qinghai Provinces and drew world attention to the slaughter of the endangered Tibetan antelope.
Professor Liang Congjie is the founder and president of FON. Under his leadership, with only 3 paid staff and an annual Budget of $23,000, the organization has grown to 1000 members and has earned a reputation as China's most influential environmental lobby group. In his lecture Professor Liang will discuss a wide range of key environmental issues facing China in this new century.
